6 High Peaks Masters team members spent an afternoon at Seagate cooking 65 meals for the homeless of Longmont. We cooked the packaged meals were cooked in Seagate's cafeteria kitchen and distributed by HOPE of Longmont, as part of Seagate's "Soup Angels" program.

Armin was a bit late and missed the picture, but was a GREAT dishwasher.

Everyone agreed that doing this made them just plain feel GOOD, doing a little thing for others who need help.

Biathlon Mass Start

Old Man Winter has not been kind to the mountains this year. Over the Holiday's we saw maybe 2 inches but all was blown off the planet by gail force winds on Saturday. Small dog alert, as we saw poodles flying by the condo with owners still attched to the leases. The winds also caused the race to be postponed to Sunday which was a much milder and sunny day. This meant no New Years party...
Eventhough it was sunny it turned out to be a tough day to shoot. None of the racers had a good day. Swirly winds, Sun? Not sure what was going on, but after good zero's everyone seemed to shoot subpar. The skiing seemed fast in some areas and slow in others, due to the dirty, icy snow. A slower paced start lead out by Kyle kept most everyone together, except for Brian that managed to stay right out in front of us. By the 1st shooting bout, race was in full swing. Lots of back and forth as shots were missed, but started to string out by the 4th shooting. I think Dean was the only one that managed to shoot clean on one of the stages. Good turn out (almost 50), but still a few missing due to the postponed race. Well organized and run race by Kyle, Dean, Bill and his wife.
Top finishes: Brian 1st, Walter 2nd, Kirk 3rd, Kyle 4th, Matt 5th, and Dean 6th.

Cross Season Wrap Up

The Colorado Cross season is DONE. This year turned into quite a finish for HPM, with the Beer-Drinkin-Dads locked into a tight battle for both the individual Colorado Cross Cup and the Team Cup Competition. That battle came down to one all or nothing day at the state championships, ran on a KILLER hard course in Castle Rock. This great shot from Mountain Moon Photography pretty much sums up how that day felt

In spite of boat-loads of pain & suffering, it was a worthy State Championship Course, and a great way to end the season. While the all or nothing battle ended that day MAYBE a bit closer to the nothing side, I am quite proud of ALL the results from the team for this year. Some new faces went out hard, and got REALLY into cross, even to the point of being a "bit" obsessed maybe. (we all knew it's addictive....) That spirit was typified by Lori Antolic flying in from 3 seeks in Asia Friday night, and then racing states the next morning, and even surviving! incredible....

There was a lot of race days done on the team for the year. (Actually this is like 2 years...)

So, how did the team do in the Colorado Cross Cup this year? Pretty damn well. We even have reason to attend the ACA/BRAC/whatever Cross Awards party this year (Saturday, Feb 4 in Golden...). You can put most of the blame for THAT on John Deibert's head. Great "rookie" season for him. SECOND on Cup points. ROCK ON.

AND the highlight for the season, THIRD for Cup Team points in the 35+ 4. Great season From John, Armin (33rd), Jonathan (45th) and Paul (50th) to keep the team in the hunt right till the end. Pretty damn cool.

CBC race #1 - Sprint

I think many of us are still working out the bugs with the first CBC Biathlon race of the season, but HPM showing great results, all racing Senior Men 10km distances for this Sprint race. Kirk 4th, Kyle 5th, Matt 6th, Dean 8th. Matt shooting the best with 70% on the day.
The change that has happened over the last couple years is the depth of the Colorado Biathlete’s., along with more participants. People are skiing stronger and shooting has improved so much that it’s not just 3-4 guy’s that can win on any given day, but could go down to any 10-15 guy’s. You can’t just throw lead down the range and expect to make it up in skiing. You have to put the entire package together. Ski strong, hit your targets and get in / out of the range fast. As a Master’s athlete, it’s not so much about winning, but the completion and when the top 4-5 are only separated by 30sec., that’s exciting head to head racing, and not just a TT anymore…

NORAM #2 Biathalon

Last weekend, three of the CBC-HPM Biathlon guy’s (Kyle, Dean, Kirk) descended on West Yellowstone, along with a group of CBC (Colorado Biathlon Club) Masters. We were met with great snow coverage and Artic cold (-12F at nights, -2F by race time). We had one day (Friday), to get our ski legs and work on our shooting. Nice easy day of training and good shooting by all.
In Saturday ‘s Sprint 7.5km with two shooting bouts (PS). CBC’s world domination continues, occupying the podium spots. Kyle and Kirk had another epic battle with Kirk finishing .1 sec in front of Kyle . HPM goes 1, 2 in the Master Men!
Dean fought hard with cracked ribs and a bruised shoulder from an MTB single speed crash a few weeks earlier to hold on for 2nd, letting CBC Bill take top honors in the Veteran Master Men. CBC taking tops spots.
In Sunday’s Pursuit 10km with four shooting bouts (PPSS). CBC continued to dominate. Kirk going off first with a target on his back from the previous day missed to ski one penalty lap due to Old-timers, and was hit with a 2min penalty to his final time. Kyle continued his strong way’s, just missing 1st. Walter from CBC who lost his rifle to a National Guard thief had to postpone his start until they could get his rifle off the back of the NG… Walter finally found a start position and skied to 1st with anxious anger. Walter 1st, Kyle 2nd, Kirk 3rd. CBC again occupying the podium and most of the top spots and HPM 2nd, 3rd.
Dean continued his strong way, battling with Bill to finish 2nd again.
The races were followed by Pizza and Lots of beer by some, at one of the only open restaurants, and with most of the group driving home that night and a couple of us flying home Monday.
This week the internal CBC battles continue with a Sprint race at Snow Mountain ranch in Grand County.

It's all coming down to one race.

Colorado State Cyclocross Championships in Castle Rock will be THE battle of the season. John Deibert tied for first in Colorado Cross Cup, and the team in second place for Team Cross Cup. The anticipation is palpable. We have the FULL herd lined up for battle Saturday. Hearing the course will be "different" and "more technical for sure", as well as including a "disco flyover". Hmmmm.

Good results continue to pour in, including some guy with a dead animal on his head making the podium in Lyons in a technical and demanding course.

Not to mention 2 others into the cup points, and general good riding in generally crappy & perfect cross conditions. Almost making up for the dry early season lately.

We'll have the full compound in effect for Saturday, so lets end the season in style. Beer & heckling will be in order, AFTER taking apart a couple of those other pesky teams, of course.

Well, we probably aren't going to catch Natural Way in the team points. In spite of maneuvers like this (I tripped over the same barrier) and this:

(I was too far behind to see what actually happened), they've opened up a big gap on us in the past few weeks.
With not many of our riders making the top 20 (or making the drive to the race, you know who I'm talking to) they are likely going to win the team classification.
But what is going on behind us?

Out of nowhere, Boulder Cycle Sport is about to overtake us for second place. They're sort of doing it with numbers (they have like 95x as many riders as we do), but they also have a couple guys who are making a strong late-season charge.

But is it over? Did you say "over"? You guys know what I'm saying. We need our entire lineup of top-tier riders who have spent the past several weeks getting massages and sleeping in hypobaric tents to pull out all the stops, get out there Sunday at Lyons HS, and clog the top 20 with HPM riders. Who's with me? LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Castle Cross wrap-up

Thanks to Dale for offering to drive the Stud Wagon, the 35+_4 crew made it to the race course before the sun came up. It was windy and freezing cold. I thought it ended up being a great race on a fun course, but our performance was not as good as we were hoping for. Maybe everyone was affected by Robert Brudenell's kind words of encouragement during the first couple laps. "Slow down, High Plains, you're going to blow up!" Maybe we can offer him some advice next time there's water to cross.

I went over the bars for the first time and Armin flatted once, and this was all before the Juniors' race had even started. I then produced an extremely weak start and got swarmed on the way up the hill, turning my front-row start into about 25th place by the time we reached the slalom course. Where, as expected, there were a few crashes and general piling up of riders. I clawed my way back through the field but barely got into the top 10. Other notable finishes were Paul in 19th, Armin in 27th, and Dale in 36th. Other HPMers were observed in a few other categories: Matt with 14th place in the 35+_3s and Al with 18th place in the 55+.

Lori came out complaining about tired legs from her 5K running race on Saturday (where she set a personal best time of 23:16). She then proceeded to ride a really smart race, right into the top 5--also a personal best for her. Too bad she was told on Monday that she's being sent to China for three weeks. The Westminster race this weekend may be the end of HPM's points in the SW4 category. Unless......Lisa? Put that camera down and kit up!

One thing was made very clear at that race: the Natural Way team is onto us. They came with an army of riders on Sunday and tore us up, scoring more than twice as many points as we did. We're looking pretty solid in 2nd place for the team points, but that will be a big gap to cross to catch Natural Way. Especially if they keep putting three in the top 20. But don't give up the ship. Since the Natural Way guys read our blog now, the HPM strategy discussion for the Westminster race has been moved to the secure encrypted top secret password-protected HPM site, located here.

Cyberstalking

Racing is hard. It makes you have poopie-face. (eh, Armin?)

More decent results, and a new twist for us. Seems as if we might just have been cyber-stalked lately. Looks like the Natural Way Raging Team is worried enough about the competition from us that they were checking out the blog. Yep, a bit of cyberstalking. Cool.

They seemed to notice the "bullseye" from John's post. Now, sadly that apparently motivated them a bit more, and they put a dent in John's plan for Colorado Cyclocross domination by scoring MORE points that we did Sunday. (Great job, John....) But it's not over yet. Lesson learned? Keep your top secret team plans in a "less public" location.

In all seriousness, it's turning into a fun rivalry, the kind where beers are on offer after the pain stops. Was even a HPM-NWRT battle way back in 35th and 36th place. No matter, it's time for them boys to watch out. OH, and enough of that "High PLAINS" heckling.

Once again, a solid bunch of results from the team, led by a SECOND place at Schoolyard Cross by John Deibert, and solid rides from Paul Ricipiti and Kirk Olson. Jonathan Jones and Chris "Cross Clash" Settje had good top 20 rides on Sunday as well.

John's plan for world, or at least Colorado Beer-Drinking-Dads-League domination appear to be on track as well. Now SECOND in Colorado Cross Cup Standings.

As Dale mentioned, High Peaks Masters is sitting in third place for the CO Cross Cup Team classification in the 35+ 4s. We're going to wind up in 2nd place there, and maybe first if we can rally just a little to beat one key player.
Here's the analysis:

Obviously the Natural Way Racing Team has a sizeable lead on us. Team Evergreen Racing also has a 10% edge on us. But a quick glance at the "Congratulations, you're upgraded!" web page from the last two weeks shows that a certain Robert Brudenell (Natural Way) and Thomas Fiorillo (Team Evergreen) have both been upgraded. Awesome! Way to go, guys.

Brudenell is responsible for 86 of Natural Way's 146 points, and Fiorillo scored 66 of Evergreen's 77 points. Neither of those guys will score another point in our beloved BDDL this season, so guess what? We have four guys that have all notched top-20s this year and we're scoring an average of 14 points per race. Team Evergreen only has one other rider who has scored 11 points all season, and we might overtake them as early as this weekend if we can put a couple guys in the top 20 and beat out that one guy. The Natural Way team will be a tougher nut to crack. 54 of their non-Brudenell points have been scored by a certain Joseph Coffey, who I've had some trouble getting in front of:

Coffey is also playing it cool enough to only have four upgrade points, so we can't wait for him to disappear. We need to go out and beat this guy! And take what's ours, which is first place in the team points.

So start hard, hammer your brains out and somebody bring me some 'embro' on Saturday. Kirk got me hooked on that shit, then left me hanging on Sunday. I was freezing on the starting line.

Who are you? Your "vitals"?

Originally from rural Maine, I currently reside in Gold Hill, west of and uphill from Boulder, the best combo of near-but-not-in the front range I've found, with no street lights, no pavement, and high speed internet access.

What do you do for a living?

Software and IT management, generally for health care IT.

What do you do on a Bike? (or Skis?)

The last two years my main focus is CX, though I enjoy getting out on the road bike and some mountain biking as well. Try to avoid hitting deer whenever possible.

When did you start racing Bikes? Start Racing Cross? Start Nordic Ski Racing?

After lots of training rides with racers since moving to CO in 2001, I started racing 2 years ago, CX only so far. I've been riding consistently for 10 years or so, and have done competitive endurance sports on and off since high school (track, cross-country, some triathloning, some multi-sport).

Any other "interesting" bike history or stories?

I managed to hit a deer at high speed two miles from home two years ago, descending to Boulder for a race. Not a good idea at for anyone considering it: 8 fractures and a 3-4 month recovery, and a persistently sore lower back. ER staff in Boulder understand though: they asked immediately if my bike was OK when I arrived.

Any Great Racing Results?

Not yet.

What else do you do for fun?

Ski, ski some more (with the useful fat boards, not those strange underfed skinny planks some on the team seem fond of), eat good food, drink good beer and wine, hike with our two goldens, get out backcountry to hike and fish.

Any bike racing goals or dreams to share?

Consistent top 20 later in the season in 35+4, if things pull together physically this year.

Why are you on H.P.M. ?

Dale's consistent supply of post-race beverages when I forget mine, team focus on cross, Kirk and Dale's interest in a team that is serious about cross but not too serious otherwise.

If you hit the Powerball lottery tomorrow, what would you go do?

Buy a second cross bike and two sets of tubulars, plan some good ski and mountaineering trips, spend more time cooking good food for friends, look for small companies that want to make a difference and give them a boost without needing to worry about an income.

How'd I do?

Well, by just about any measure, my first cyclocross race was a success.
No crashes or mechanical issues. My new bike is sweet.

Heart rate monitor data seems to indicate that I rode about as hard as I could:

(Apparently my limits are a little higher than previously believed. Which means that the 'training' I did earlier this year should have been harder. Hmmmmm.)

Results: Valmont race, SM35+_4 results
I started with no more than 15 riders behind me (of an 89-rider field) and managed to claw my way up to 24th place.

Fun: oh yeah. I stayed alert and felt like I was riding solid through the whole race. I was airing it out on every lap on the downhill jumpy section after the top gravel pit (how come no one else was flying over those jumps?). I had to sprint all the way to the line, only to lose anyway by about a wheel-length to a guy that had gone back-and-forth with me at least three times during the race. I did notice people cheering for me a few times, which was awesome. I think my fans consisted of Lori, her mom, Callie, and Armin. THANKS!

Other notable events: catching up to Dale while running up the big steps on the third lap, and trying to say something funny. Not being able to jump back on my bike at the top of the same steps on the fourth lap. I was kind of trotting along looking at the bike and it just was not going to happen. So I reached down with my hand and rotated the cranks back so I could step on and climb over the bike that way. Lori also had a great race in SW4, and got 13th out of 33 racers.. She dug really deep in the final sprint and came around to beat another girl by no more than six inches at the line. Awesome!

So, Cross season is underway. Al Naudin was the first one out of the gate, racing to a 5th place in the 55s at Queens of Cross in Golden. way to break in the season for us, Al!

Many more will be starting their season out Saturday the 17th in Boulder's new Valmont park, including John Deibert, a new member this year, and the subject of this team interview session.

Who are you? Your "vitals"?

John Deibert, 37, 5'8" 148 lbs. Happily married to Lori Antolec, no kids, two cats (hers), five bikes (and need one more, fast)

Where are you from?

born in Cheyenne, WY, lived in Fort Worth, TX and mostly grew up in Sioux Falls, SD. Moved to Boulder for college in 1992 and have been hanging around since then.

What do you do for a living?

Mostly button-pushing and typing. I test disk drives at Seagate.

What do you do on a Bike?

Go fast, fly through the air, wheelies, stoppies, the usual stuff. I ride roads, mountain bike, plan to start racing cross this year. I ride a bike to work most days (but I draw the line at -10 degrees F).

2003. This year. Not on your life.

Any other "interesting" bike history or stories?

I think I had a concussion from going over the bars for the first time at the age of, oh, maybe 10. And I went 1 year without driving my car to work when we moved to our current residence (1.5 miles from work)

Any Great Racing Results?

10th place in the 2004 Iron Horse (30-34 mens), 5th place sprinter in 2004 Mead series (Settje was 1st), 1st place in the 2008 Breck 32 (overall), 6th in the 2011 Breck 32 (30-39 mens).

What else do you do for fun?

Snowboard, travel with Lori, watch the Grand Tours on TV religiously

Any bike racing goals or dreams to share?

Not really. My goal in any race is for it to be good at the finish, get to fight it out and do something heroic to beat someone. I hope to have fun trying some cross races this year, and watch Lori tear it up more than she did last year.

Why are you on H.P.M. ?

My first matching kit, awesome! And to hang out with a bunch of great riders and fun people.

If you hit the Powerball lottery tomorrow, what would you go do?

Maybe fund the medical research it's going to take to replace all my failing joints. Either that or go mountain biking all around the world with Lori.

I started cycling and skiing after my family moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin in 1971. It was in Wisconsin that I got the nickname Little Foonman that eventually shortened to Foon. I moved to Boulder County in 1978 and have mostly been here since.

What do you do for a living?

What do you do on a Bike?

As many different things as possible. The diversity of the sport is fantastic. Once in a while I actually ride to work, but mostly I it’s my RV. Recently I have been doing long rides -- randonneuring and brevets up to 750 miles over four days.

When did you start racing Bikes? Start Racing Cross? Start Nordic Ski Racing?

First bike race was in 1979, the first spring after moving to Boulder.

First ski race was around the same time, probably the Stampede when it was at Devil’s Thumb.

Racing cross since 2013.

Any other "interesting" bike history or stories?

I rode the Mesa Trail in 1979 on my race bike (sew-ups, cleats). Remember there were no mountain bikes back then. By the time I got back to Boulder and stopped in at the Spoke, people were already talking about the crazy guy on the trail. As best I know, that was the first time anyone road the Mesa Trail, and it got closed to bikes shortly after. You’re welcome.

Shortest race: 200 meters (track sprints in Kenosha, Wisconsin, 1981)

Longest ride: 3400 miles (PACTour Elite Tour transcontinental, 19 days, 2010)

24-hour PR: 410 miles (first 24 hours of Last Chance, 2010)

Any Great Racing Results?

Most crashes: twice in the criterium at Bisbee, Arizona, three times in the stage race (1980)

Time Trial PR: 54:20 (25 miles, Colorado State Championships, 8th place, 1981)

Largest winnings: $150 (Bob Cook Memorial Mt Evans Hill Climb, 6th place in Pro-1-2, 2:02:32, 1982)

Yep, it’s been downhill since 1982.

What else do you do for fun?

Hosting a team cookout after cross camp.

I’ve also been having fun running a chain saw to deal with beetle kill and blow down in Fraser.

Any cycling or skiing goals or dreams to share?

- My goal is to enjoy cycling and skiing for the rest of my life. I would like to get back to bike touring where my cycling started -- spending days or weeks on the road with just the gear I’m carrying.

- I have designed a new 750-mile brevet, Haute Route, that goes through the central mountains and hits many of the big climbs (Trail Ridge and 8 major passes). I would like this to become the world’s premier high challenge brevet.

- Birkebeiner: never have; need to soon. Both of them.

Why are you on H.P.M. ?

1. To impress the chicks.

2. I needed new cycling shorts and a ski race outfit.

Kirk has done a great job putting together a low key group with cheap stuff. The clothes, not the chicks.

If you hit the Powerball lottery tomorrow, what would you go do?

Fly to Europe with my touring bike, passport and credit card. Then spend the winter skiing in Norway.

Ride Mountain bikes for fun, Intervals on road bike and race cyclocross.

When did you start racing Bikes? Start Racing Cross? Start Nordic Ski Racing?

Always raced against neighbor kids in Montana. Raced a couple of Duathlon (run,bike,run) in AZ, but First official bike only race was the "Cat's Hill Critierium" in Los Gatos, CA. - 1989 I think.. (got lapped in a cat 5 field)
First full bike racing season was in 1992 in CO.
Started cyclocross and MTB racing about 92 or 93.

Started my ski career Alpine ski racing at age 5. Played with the classic skinny sticks as a kid, thru school sponsored trips. I didn't start Nordic skiing or racing until the 2000's after I quit bike racing for 4 years. Being from MT and raised with guns, Biathlon was a normal route a year after learning to skate ski.

Any other "interesting" bike history or stories?

Punctured a hole and tendon behind my knee with a front chain ring, after being run over by another cross racer. Filled the shoe up with blood but still finished the race. Trip to ER after...Thanks Dale.

Raced the Vail 100 MTB a couple years. Stayed very close to the lead group (within sight) one year until about mile 60 where I had a complete melt down for an hour or so...Still don't remember what I did for that hour.

After a night of parting, I lined up for a MTB race in Hua Hin, Thailand, on a rented 40lb Trek. Drained my camelback at the line waiting for the race to start. Dehydrated, I ended up lost running thru a farmers rice patty field afraid I was going to get bitten by a snake (everything very blurry), and then proceeded to the jungle ending up in some village. (no cyclist around..) Passed out on the ground and some nice villager gave me some water and haled my ass back to the start line after a 30min drive in the back of mini truck.

After Drinking a 4 shot mocha late before a Pagosa Springs criterium, I proceeded to lap the field, ride thru them and miss 1st place by a wheel length. After the race all I could say is "can't stop, got to keep riding.." Next day's Hill climb road race was not as pretty.

Any Great Racing Results?

Won the Mead circuit race series a couple years. A few MTB wins, Lot's of top 10's in road, cross, MTB and a 3rd place Podium last year at Cross NACT Boulder Res in 45+.
Two 4th and one 5th place finish at Biathlon Nationals last winter and several top 5 in other Nordic and Biathlon races thru the years.

What else do you do for fun?

Spend as much time in the Mountains as I can, with my wife and dogs.

Any bike racing goals or dreams to share?

Main cyclocross and Nordic goals are just to have FUN and be stay fit enough to mix it up every race with the top guy's. Biathlon the same, but hope to travel and hit more NAC races, Nationals, a trip to Finland for World Masters and the World Masters Olympics in a few years in Italy..

Why are you on H.P.M. ?
ah...I started this... I've ridden for many teams, including Alan and Ridley for Cross. I just wanted my own team, own clothing and to be able to do whatever I wanted, whenever.

If you hit the Powerball lottery tomorrow, what would you go do?
Would be doing pretty much the same stuff, except not working... Would be living more in the mountains, still racing cyclocross, Biathlon and Nordic. More Travel to Visit and race the other world Masters, outside the Colorado mutants. Oh, and go back to school to learn other languages.

Been trying to think up something to add some traffic & interest to the old H.P.M. blog.

What Got dreamed up is a series of team member interviews. Going to start with myself. Hope to run thru everyone on the team eventually. So, I present to you, the "H.P.M canned interview". Enjoy.

Who are you? Your "vitals"?

Dale Riley - 50 Years old, Happily married, no kids

Where are you from?

Denver, Colorado. Colorado Native, born & bread. Never saw a reason to leave here.

What do you do for a living?

A geek. Electrical Engineer for Seagate Technology. Make Disk Drives.

What do you do on a Bike?

I Race cross, the odd Mountain bike race, and LOVE to ride the mountain bike and explore on the thing. Have grown to pretty much hate road riding.

When did you start racing Bikes? Start Racing Cross? Start Nordic Ski Racing?

Not really sure about the dates. Probably about 1987 or 1988? I know I went to Colorado Springs for Road Worlds in 1986, and started racing by then or not long after. I also know I rode in the "citizen" races at the World MTB championships at both Durango in 1990 and Vail in 1994, so a while. Remember racing cross at the Boulder series where Velo Swap started in 1989. I don't Nordic ski.

Any other "interesting" bike history or stories?

I used to compete in Observed Trials events in the old Colorado Off Road Points Series races. Managed to win 2 of them in beginner Stock.

Any Great Racing Results?

Not really. Pretty much mediocre pack fodder. A few top 5's in Beginner Mountain bike races.

What else do you do for fun?

I like to Backcountry ski, and in general be in the high mountains, or wandering around in the Desert.

Any bike racing goals or dreams to share?

I would love to consistently finish top 20 in the 35+ 4s So I could then feel good and upgrade & race 45+

Why are you on H.P.M. ?

Wanted a laid back, team of friends to race with that did not need new clothing every year.

If you hit the Powerball lottery tomorrow, what would you go do?

Buy an airplane big enough to haul a few bodies AND their bikes, and do the MOTHER of all mountain bike "road trips".

The Colorado Cross Classic, Day 1 of the National Cyclocross Trophy Series was pretty good to the High Peaks Masters team.

Kirk Took 3rd in the SM45+ open Race, and got the full-blown podium treatment

Armin had a great ride for a 7th Place in the SM35+ Cat 4 race. Paul Riciputi was 24th, and Dale Riley got 35th in a full field of 100 starters.

Al Naudin Hauled in a 23th place in the 55+, and Lori Antolec showed great progress with 15th in a large field of SW4's for her second race.

The Compound

Rolled out the new HPM team compound fro the Blue Sky Velo CX race on Saturday. Brian at Boulder Racing was SO happy with the teams help over the last years, he made a donation to the HPM team, which we turned around into this:

10'x10' pop up tent with 4 sides, and a rocking banner to "pro" it up. Good for the cold CX months and even the Nordic folks can use it. Available for any race anyone wants to bring it to. (Contact Kirk).

Also, a big welcome (back) to Paul Ricipiti. Paul is (re-)joining the team, coming back from a nasty crash last year. Paul raced with some of us previously on the Cyclists for the Planet team. He was already back in the mix at Xilinx. Wellcome aboard, Paul!!

The true local cyclocross debut for the HPM team was at the Xilinx Campus in Longmont Saturday. 9 of the HPM world domination squad raced, and great results were posted across the board. This was also the HPM "Race Work" day, and we had a great turnout for that as well, including our resident randonner, Tim "Foon" Feldman. By far the quickest course teardown I have ever seen.

Lisa Robinson Rocked in her first cross race, and Al and Kirk are going to TEAR UP the older groups this year.

HPM team trail work day

The first annual HPM trail work day had a great turnout. Brought out 11 People, plus a Boulder County Trail Specialist and the Hall Ranch Caretaker to keep us pointed in the right direction. We did basic maintenance (drain construction & Cleaning) and some tread improvement on at least a full mile of the Hall Ranch rock garden section.

Worked from the first big step up to the top near the bench. It is amazing the amount of gravel washing down that section. According to the Caretaker, it takes work at least once a year to clean out the drains & get the water off the trail.

Was a nice, cool, foggy day, perfect for such physical efforts.

We got a LOT of work done, and the county guys were highly complementary of the effort shown. "best crew we've seen in a long time" was the feedback.

Feels good to give back a bit to the trails we ride so much, and get so much enjoyment out of. Special thanks to the "non-team" people who came out. John Deibert, Callie Riley, and Todd Bouchet. Thanks for joining us for the day!

Summer Biathlon Sweep

The High Peaks Masters team sweeps the top spots in every event entered at the Colorado Biathlon Club Summer Biathlon.

Kirk Olson & Matt Robinson take 1st & 2nd in Match Overall, besting a 14 entrant field. Lisa Robinson & Brenda Drake go 1-2 in Match women overall. These 4 also won their respective age groups in the match group. Dale Riley won the 40-49 Sport group, while taking 4th overall in a 9 shooter field.

Just the beginning of world domination by the powerhouse High Peaks Masters Team.

70 Miles & 8900 feet of Wyoming MTB goodness.

22nd of 30 finishers in Sport 50+. Race had a 25% DNF rate.

Brenda, Lisa Matt and I ventured up North to West Yellowstone to attend Marc Sheppard's (Altius handcrafted firearms), Biathlon Camp.
For all but me it was the first time, other then their Red Book certification in March.
There were 10 campers include us, and had Marc & Erich Wilbrecht (ex USA Biathlon Team & 92 Olympics), as coaches. What is normally a very closed sport, Marc and Erich freely shared their knowledge and years of experience.
4 good day's of intense Biathlon shooting. Everyone shooting well for their first time out, and of course Matt being his typical self and overachieving...For me it was trying to break all my bad habits of target shooting I learned as a kid and learning the correct way to shoot biathlon. Could have used this camp about 4 years ago...
One thing that really drove it all home was when Marc put us on the Laser, and we could see what we were doing from the time of set up, thru all 5 shots. Got to get me one of these...(Matt your due to buy something expensive !)
The Camp concluded with two races. MTB Biathlon on Saturday and Running Biathlon on Sunday.
Since the National Guard sent about 60+, the races were well attended. Both Lisa and Brenda did great in their first races (7th and 8th), and had smiles the entire time. Matt 8th and I was 5th in the Match class. Matt not really wanting to run or race on Sunday decided to stand in the MTB course when the "sport" group was racing. The result was a National Guard running him over, putting two nice, very deep divots in his calf and a deep internal bruise that has him still limping a week later. Since Brenda can't run, only Lisa and I did the running Biathlon. I don't think Lisa will ever do a running biathlon again, and I managed to shoot like crap, while trying to incorporate all my new Biathlon skills. Lot's of penalty laps, I finished 13th in Match and Lisa was 8th in woman's Match. Coach Erich of course wining overall honors.
Fun was had by all and everyone very excited to start training with all we have learned and can't wait until the winter races start. Round 2 of West Yellowstone comes around Thanksgiving or 1st week in December, with another possible camp and "winter" Biathlon races.
Look for HPM at all the CBC races this winter and the summer biathlon race 9/12.

Want to try a summer biathlon race, come out on 9/12 to Snow Mountain Ranch.

Great day up there Saturday. Perfect weather, Down trees forced a new course ALL south of Vasquez road. Almost 5 miles of Dirt Road/Road Race-like stuff, and into a stiff breeze to boot. NOT the best course, but a good day none the less. Mid Pack or better for the HPM crowd in the old guy sport.

Tim finished his trans-continental ride yesterday. 19 days to ride coast to coast. 3000 miles. more than 95 THOUSAND feet of climbing. 160 Miles a DAY. I can't imagine it..... Tim keeps on trucking across the US. In spite of 70 MPH winds knocking members of his tour off the road, 5 flats in a day,

and nasty wind in Kansas, he's in the midst of the heartland, eating up the states one at a time. Flying the HPM kit a lot of the time. Hope the hypnotic and endless roads of Knasas don't mess with his mind.

The High peaks masters team strives to present a positive image and high integrity in everything related to the team. As such, we strive to be part of the solution to problems, rather than contribute to them. Since something as simple as a training ride in team uniform can make an impression (good or bad) on a large audience, here is a reminder for everyone wearing the uniform, and representing the team.

Please don't take part in any group rides where inappropriate road manners are displayed. if there is even one person in a group ride engaging in improper or disrespectful riding, it can undo years of careful, considerate riding from dozens of others. There is enough bad feelings from the drivers on the road now, without reinforcing the negative stereotypes of the "rude cyclist" that already exist.

Should you be on a ride where others insist on such poor behavior, (riding in the oncoming lane, in front of traffic, rolling stop signs, etc..) please consider NOT showing the HPM team colors in such a group. The future of driver-rider relations is in ALL our hands.

Foon's Big Ride

Wanting to wish Tim Feldman the best on his upcoming transcontinental ride. Yes, Trans CONTINENTAL ride. Gives you a new definition of what a LONG ride is. Foon's little adventure for the spring is set up to look like this:

San Diego, CA to Williamsburg, VA
Mileage per day is between 140 and 220 miles, averaging 160 miles per Day.

He is riding with PAC Tour, run by former RAAM riders and record holders Susan Notorangelo and Lon Haldeman, and it is a fully supported trip. Can hopefully see some mid-ride updates on the PAC Tour website.

Now, Kirk is laid up with a bum elbow, Rick bagged, Brent changed his mind, and yours truly is just plain too far out of race shape to even THINK about racing, much less 50 MTB miles.

I haven't spoke to the crew in Slovenia, but looking at the results, must have been a tough shooting day.

Saturday 1/30 DTR Goveners Cup races

Trails were in pretty good condition last Saturday. Some New snow, but should be fast conditions. May have to reach for the fluro again...
30km race starts at noon, followed by the 15km race at 12:10. Come on out and watch, should be some fun things going on, along with the fantastic racing. !

Matt, John and I will be at DTR on Saturday, to do an Overdistance easy ski.

The Governor's Cup and the Devil's Thumb

I'm going to race from the Governor's Cup menu on January 30 at Devil's Thumb Ranch. I figure the 30K skate oughta just about bury me. The course looks wicked fun. Any other HPMasters intent on racing there? And, does anyone have intel to offer from prior experience with the GC @ DTR?

Btw, I also am mightily impressed by Kirk and Matt's results at the Steamboat 23K skate. That's really well done fellows.

Thanks to Phil and Swix, Matt and I had great fast skis. Nothing a little Fluro rotor corked in over LF & HF6 doesn't fix...
Most the real fast guy's were in the 42km race, so Matt and I took advantage of that the best we could. Still great personal results for both of us. I beat my previous time by 10min, and Matt I think having one of his best races Yet !

Nordic update Jan 13

Last weekend Dean had his first of the year apearance in a Nordic (non Biathlon) race. Mixiing it up with the Summit county crew. 16km skate around the Frisco Nordic center, Skiing strong to 20th place.
I made it out to the SMR 15km classic on Saturday. As alway's, the weather was colder then expected. I think we started at -10..? Any case, lots of kick, while glide was hard to come by. Good start and felt good with my diagonal striding. Stayed ahead of most of the Masters crew, until 3/4 thru the first lap. Then a couple got by me, but managed to hang on and mix it up the remainder of the race. It was fun to be able to mix it up with these guy's and not just hang on for my life... Lost Jame Howe in the double pole section. He seemed to have a little better glide. (Toko, go figure..) Still a good finish 20th overall and 3rd in my age group (40-44)

This weekend Kyle, Mary, and Dean will hit up the two Biathlon races at SMR, while Phil, John, Matt and I will take on the Steamboat Stampede (23km skate).

Steamboat relay

Good showing and racing in Steamboat. We had two teams racing the 3x7.5km course. First leg was classic and 2nd 3rd were skate. Team 1 Kirk, Matt, Tim. Team 2 Phil, Mary, Kyle. Phil and I led off the classic leg.
I passed and held off my nordic nemesis James Howe to tag Matt in 5th. Matt and Tim both powered thru the course with strong finish in 9th out of 30 stacked teams. Team 2 also had a great race with Phil surviving on his years of technique and great finish by Mary and Kyle having the fastest skate leg for HPM on the day. Team 2 finished 19th.

A good "blooper" of me taking out some poor innocent fellow competitor on the icy hill. (Note to self, do NOT miss your mount on icy, rutted ground) Bruises are starting to heal form that one. I like the spectator coming to help, I do NOT remember anyone running out in front of us. The poor guy I took out did not jump up at first. Thought he was hurt, till I heard him (with his hands over his head..) saying "Don't hit me, Don't hit me" over and over.

Start of the 50-54 race. You KNOW you are in for it when the first crash is within 20 meters of the start. Best riders in the nation come together to compete..... You'd think they could get more than 20 meters off the line without groveling around on the ice.

Called up in 97th out of 192 riders. Great race moved up and finished 44th. Only 1 crash today and only 1 on thursday.

Racing starts

Racing starts at 8:30 with Deirdre and Mary. 11 with Matt and Dale and I at 3pm. Course is nice. Grass power sections, twisty technical, stair run up, very steep hill ( hard to ride). Not much pavement, was surprised. Back side of course is all packed snow. California guys were having problems driving in it. Results later. Stay tuned.

CO cyclocross states are Saturday. Please note the race start times, as some are different then the standard this year.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

Cross is coming to a close. Just two races this weekend, then States on the 5th.
Matt, Dale and I are heading out to Nationals in Bend, to try and not get lapped...Will be wearing the New Clothing also !!
About 200 riders in each of our respective categories, so the start should be a mess. Hope to make it around 1 lap before getting lapped, or at least finishing ahead of the place I started.

Not sure if any if anyone is in West Yellowstone? Kyle / Mary? The Nordic supertour races started today ! At least they have snow. SMR has some (25km) groomed and I may try to ski there on Friday. If not, back on the Rollerskis.

Lot's of Nordic races this winter. For the Nordic team, let me know what races you have in mind. Try to car pool if we can. Also will try to set up some day's when we can all ski together.

Colors are hard to see on the computer, but the sample actually look nice. I'll be adding logo placement tonight, and will be placing the orders on Friday, for everyone that is marked Oct on the sheet.
Will get the 3D proof in a week or so, and samples to try on for size about that same time. I'll set up a time or bring the clothing to work for everyone to confirm size.
SS Jerseys will be Micro Grid with Full zip - Same as the "Pro" jersey, with out the "PRO" cut fit... Shorts fabric will be the same as the Pro also, with the better pad.
